I'd say real. 600mm focal length and f4 makes for a narrow DOF and nicely blurred background. Works well to isolate the subject.

That is a very good point. The only reason I wondered was the sharp outline of the bird against the background... but Claude doesn't seem like the sort of person to cheat on his photos :p

It's the sort of background you can have with a canon 600mm and subject in the 6 meters range.
