I changed my 1d MKII and bought a 50D. Although AF it's a little different (follow me, not in relative speed but in ai servo modes like fast, moderatly fast, slow etc. in 1d series) the 15Mp sensor and 1.6x factor are very useful in photographing little birds and bird photography in general: they give me a plus of 200mm in focal distance and a nice crop possibilities. Now I can crop and mantain a good size for print. With the 8Mp of 1d was a pain.

In macro shots I never used it cause I own a 5d also and I prefer full frame for that. But I think you shoot macro at iso 100 or 200 for best image quality rarely 400 iso, so no difference with 30D or 40D, but double the size
